BEFORE you tell me to use Search-I already did. And BEFORE you tell me to read through all of the threads' content-I already did. I found some things relating to my problem, tried the solutions-but to no avail. My issue is, that when I start up Guild Wars I cannot continue past "Connecting to ArenaNet". I have reinstalled before and it worked-just yesterday, in fact. Now, however, the problem has resurfaced. I don't know how to repair a ".dat file" or even know what that could be.

If you know the solution and are kind enough to help a guy out, thanks. If you know the solution, are kind enough to help a guy out AND include step-by-step instructions, then kudos to you, you're Superman.

Le Loup; I would love to help however I don't have enough information to be able to. Almost everyone here is gonna tell you to restart your computer and try again. But without some discription of your computer it is not possible to give truely useful instructions.
Lets start with how you connect to the web? Cable? Dial-up? DSL? What router are you using? What computer are you using? A lappy? Desktop? Windows98? I hope you see what I mean.

I understand, sorry for not posting specifics.

I have a Gateway Laptop running Windows 7, and I'm using DSL with a modem, of which I connect to wirelessly. I also have Microsoft Security Essentials (I post this because I think that I've enabled Guild Wars to run through it, but I'm unsure).

The first time this issue surfaced, I had connected to my University's wireless internet and played GW. Today I did the same thing (after reinstalling and playing without any problems yesterday), so I don't know if that could be an issue.

I REALLY don't wish to re-install GW. It's a pain.

I don't think this has anything to do with a corrupted .dat file. It sounds like a run-of-the-mill sucky ISP. ANywho, tracert and pathping are going to be your friends for figuring out the problem. Also, plug in the the modem with a network cable when you're at home -- the difference in connection speed is meaningful.

Some university's will block connection to Guild Wars. Don't ask me why, it may have to do with it appearing to be P2P type of stuffs. They tend to activly search out these things and what might work one day, might not the day after they block that connection.

Just a thought in-case it's only happening on university connects. Although, it seems a bit early for back to school thought I might put in my penny.

I don't understand this. From what I gather, it just auto-centers one's icons on the middle of the screen.

@Chthon: I don't know what tracert or pathping is.

@End: I played perfectly fine through the University's connection-it allowed it. But when I left and connected to my home's wireless, it ceased. It tries to "Connect to ArenaNet" with a progress bar that reads "0%".

Do you have a wired connection you can test at home?

Do you have another computer at home just to test with?

It's possible your wireless router isn't forwarding the proper ports, or MS Security Essentials is blocking it because it's a different network.

Are you running peerguardian? Have you tried disabling Windows security essentials to see if that is blocking connection/not set up properly?

Guild Wars is indeed working on my wirelessly-enabled desktop computer which runs Windows XP. I'm able to connect, log-in, and play. So I'm thinking it has something to do with Microsoft Security Essentials-my virus scanner. It's somehow blocking it.

Anyone know how to (SPECIFICALLY) enable GW to run through it?

I've turned PeerBlocker off, and I've tried it with MSE off-it still won't connect to ArenaNet servers, or something.

There is a quick and easy way to see if the cause of the issue is MSE by turning it off using “msconfig.exe.” On Windows7 click start, type in msconfig then press enter. Click on the tab titled “Startup.” Uncheck the entry titled “Microsoft Security Essentials” then click the “OK” button. You will need to restart your computer just click restart. When your computer restarts the only thing turned off will be MSE. Try to run Guild Wars again. If it runs then your configuration of MSE is the cause, I have two computers here running it and no problems with Guild Wars at all.
When you are at home Loup, can you browse the internet with your lappy? If you can then we know that it is not a hardware issue. The cause of the issue is most likely a configuration issue with your router. What are you using for a Router?
I say the router because your computer can play Guild Wars wirelessly at school.

I'm on the web right now, on this thread with my lappy. And my desktop, which is connected to the same network runs GW effortlessly (but I prefer to use my lappy because, at least until now, it has better performance running my games.) And I'm running a Qwest modem of some sort. I'll get back to you guys as soon as a restart my lappy. I'm not done yet, but thanks so far for all of the help, everyone.

I've done as you instructed, but to no avail once again. However, while browsing the msconfig services tab, I noticed that "Windows Firewall" was on. I want to disable it, but is there a way without exposing my lappy to serious malware and other viruses? Given that I DO have MSE (how do I turn that back on, by the way?) but I don't know exactly what turning off "Windows Firewall" will do.

For a test run, turning off "Windows Firewall" poses little risk, as long at GW is the only thing access the web. Give it a shot. As for how to turn on MSE just put a check mark in the box and click ok to turn it back on. You will need to restart it again.

I'm not able to find MSE in the list of programs-which concerns me a little. And alright, I'll give it shot once I'm done doing a quick scan on my lappy. But if it works, then what? I have to play GW without a firewall? I'm not too keen on that idea...

Disabling Windows Firewall does nothing. DISABLING EVERYTHING AT ONCE DOES NOTHING. What the he11 is going on with my lappy? Just last week I was playing GW without a hitch. 2 days ago it started to act up.
